You can pick up the echo in “Fixer," the haunting second collection of poems from Edgar Kunz. The narrator of these poems bounces from one side hustle to another, each more absurd than the last. In “Model,” he’s paid to pose in jeans at a gas station. In “Shoulder Season,” he’s paid to slice window panes out of massive sheets of glass. I am notany of those things, but I amnot comfortedNo one will accuse Edgar Kunz of being out of step with the zeitgeist.

In the Republican coalition, it is a moment that has culminated decades of change – and one that points to years of turbulence ahead. Overwhelming majorities of Republican voters dismiss the charges against Trump. In Gallup’s latest annual survey of trust in institutions, Republicans expressed less faith in 10 of the 16 measured. Veteran GOP pollster Whit Ayres points to another, more personal, reason so many GOP voters have discounted the charges against Trump. Trump is the Republican most effectively riding that wave now, but it seems unlikely to recede whenever he fades from the political scene.

Ron DeSantis’ exclusive interview with NBC News’ Dasha Burns covered a wide range of topics, including two issues dogging DeSantis on the campaign trail: abortion and his state’s new Black history standards. And although he’s pledged to be a “pro-life president,” he’s broken with some others in the GOP field and has not embraced a federal ban on abortions. “I think the reality is that that basically means the states are going to have primary control over it,” DeSantis said. Asked if he would veto a national abortion ban, DeSantis said, “We will be a pro-life president, and we will support pro-life policies. DeSantis defended the standards, saying “it’s very clear that they’re showing that this was a grave injustice, and it contradicted the founding principles of our country.”“Those standards were not political at all.

Opinion | Climate Is Now a Culture War Issue

if Republicans do take the White House, has a lot to do with the way science in general and climate science in particular have become a front in the culture war. About attitudes toward science: As recently as the mid-2000s, Republicans and Democrats had similar levels of trust in the scientific community. Does anyone seriously doubt that similar attitudes are driving rank-and-file Republicans to oppose action on climate change? The fact that the climate war is now part of the culture war worries me, a lot. Special interests can do a great deal of damage, but they can be bought off or counterbalanced with other special interests.

Moss and Levene push back against his generalizations, accusations and abuse; Aaronow does not. Wes Anderson’s Best Needle Drops
  + stars: | 2023-06-16 | by ( ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
Dear listeners,One day when I was 14, I stayed home sick from school and watched a weird little movie called “Rushmore” on Comedy Central. The filmmaker Wes Anderson had created his own alternate reality, with its own color scheme, its own vernacular, and — perhaps most crucially — its own killer music. For aspiring aesthetes, Anderson’s movies can be gateway drugs. Eager to catch all of his cinematic references and influences, his films led me to the work of directors like François Truffaut, Yasujiro Ozu and Satyajit Ray. The needle drops in most of Anderson’s films are the result of his longtime working relationship with the music supervisor Randall Poster.

Gender, relationships, family and the meaning of pop culture. But does “Almost Famous” have a scene when the sky opens to reveal giant chopsticks hovering over salmon roe as big as skyscrapers? A minor description from Theodore McCombs’s inquisitive fantasia URANIANS (Astra House, 210 pp., $25), his debut collection, illuminated the whole book for me. The main character in “Laguna Heights,” frustrated by memory gaps caused by his top-shelf neurotechnology, is called the “sort of man pleased to remember that old movies are still in the world.” He’s not pleased; he’s the kind of person who would be pleased. This detached phrasing, however tossed-off, tore me out of the moment, and confronted me with an iffy behavioral theory: Identity predetermines emotions and actions, and emotions and actions reinforce identity, in one smooth loop.

The park with the most roller coasters in the world

Impressive collections can be found in many parts of the world, but which park currently holds more roller coasters than any other? With a whopping 20 roller coasters, Six Flags Magic Mountain even rates a mention with Guinness World Records – helping the park justify its “Thrill Capital of the World” slogan. “I think there are a lot of great rides at Six Flags Magic Mountain.” he told CNN Travel recently. “But there are some other more fundamental reasons for why Six Flags Magic Mountain has so many roller coasters.”Location, prosperity and weather all played roles, he said. They’re fast, they’re twisty.”GoliathMartin Lewison said Goliath has the biggest drop of any traditional-style roller coaster at Six Flags Magic Mountain.
CNN —Republican Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina on Sunday teased a “major announcement” on May 22, signaling he will formally enter the 2024 GOP presidential primary after launching an exploratory committee earlier this month. Be in attendance,” Scott said at an event in Charleston, South Carolina. In announcing his exploratory committee, Scott emphasized his evangelical faith, his race and his experience growing up as the son of a single mother. The South Carolina Republican expanded on that message Sunday, stating, “I believe there’s nothing wrong with the American people. He also served in the South Carolina state House and on the Charleston County Council.
“He’s such a technician and this classicist and also contemporary and free — he’s an investigator, you know?” Whelan said. He is engaged to the fashion designer Zac Posen, whom he met at City Ballet and became close with during the pandemic. Much of his life has been erratic and wild, fueled, in part, by drug and alcohol addiction. He started ballet training at 4 with the now-defunct Charleston Ballet Theater in South Carolina and performed as a child. “It was a really weird situation,” Vera Ball, his mother, said, “but, yeah, that’s what we had to do.”
‘Tetris’ Review: Story of a Soviet Videogame
  + stars: | 2023-03-31 | by ( John Anderson | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: +1 min
When Vladimir Putin daydreams about the glories of the old Soviet Union, he’s probably not thinking about Tetris, still among the most popular videogames ever created and the U.S.S.R.’s most important contribution to international pop culture since Boris Pasternak . Mr. Putin might long to retrieve the rights to the game, though, which is what “Tetris” is all about. There have been a number of very good films in recent years that might be described as business-political thrillers, among them “American Hustle,” “The Wolf of Wall Street” and even “Joy,” in which the villainy was mostly about greed, forged signatures, illicit payoffs and general scammery—rather than, say, spies, surveillance, threats of death and car chases. “Tetris,” in its generosity and occasional overkill, provides all of the above, along with Taron Egerton as Henk Rogers , a game designer and hustler described by one Soviet citizen as “dumb, but honest.” He’s not really dumb, though. He’s just naïve and guileless enough to think he can go to a country where the “game over” sign is already starting to blink and where diehard Marxists and would-be capitalists are picking over the bones of a decaying empire.
The Rise of Kickback Capitalism

“I’m a capitalist,” President Biden said in the State of the Union address. He then added, “But pay your fair share.” He’s missing the fashionable modifiers for capitalism: late, sustainable, patrimonial, state-directed. Real capitalism is, by definition, a meritocracy in which money flows to those providing the highest returns. America’s rugged individualism makes it most compatible with real capitalism. But now we’ve entered an era of kickback capitalism, which has created a mangy mob of meritless mooches.
‘The Ark’ Review: A Rude Awakening in Space

If not for the snowballing crises that keep the mission in motion, “The Ark” might as well be about a sci-fi singles bar in space. Everyone is the same approximate age, attractive, capable, accomplished (except for the stowaways) and genetically primed to start a new society on a new world. In episode 4, one officer thinks he hears a baby. “There are no babies aboard this ship,” he’s told. What kind of survivalist space drama would that be?
“I was twenty the first time I heard the story of what Pa allegedly said to Mummy the day of my birth,” Harry writes. So, too, despite all Harry’s resentment, seems to be his brother. William stays by Harry’s side the night before Harry’s wedding, only leaving to stay the night with Kate and his kids. But on this topic, Harry’ resentment gets the better of him. They’ll read “Spare” and see that, personalities aside, the chief culprit for Harry’s lifelong resentment is the unfortunate law of primogeniture.
‘A Man Called Otto’ Review: Forrest Grump
  + stars: | 2022-12-30 | by ( Kyle Smith | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: +1 min
This was the year Tom Hanks decided to stretch himself: Lately seen portraying Col. Tom Parker as a Mephistophelean con artist in “Elvis,” he’s back as the world’s grumpiest man in “A Man Called Otto,” which attempts to disguise the famously sunny actor as a walking cloud bank. Set in a condominium development in Pennsylvania in the winter, the remake of 2015’s Swedish film “A Man Called Ove” (which was based on a novel of the same name) casts Mr. Hanks as a lonely and humorless widower who isn’t so much fighting depression as surrendering to it. He’s an inveterate rule-enforcer, whistle-blower and manager-caller who snarls and grumbles at everyone who crosses his path. But given Mr. Hanks’s history of role choices, it seems only a matter of time before Otto’s heart of gold starts to shine through his miserable façade. And without even a warning from the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come.
The New York City bishop who was robbed of around $1 million in jewelry during a livestreamed service in July was arrested Monday morning and is facing fraud and extortion charges, according to the U.S. Attorney's office. "His campaign of fraud and deceit stops now.”If convicted, Whitehead faces a minimum of 20 years in prison, court documents say. “Bishop Lamor Whitehead is not guilty of these charges. “You wanna come preach?” he’s heard saying toward the end of the livestreamed service. Whitehead wasn’t arrested, according to police, but the bishop disagreed and said he was put in a holding cell.
Despite unprecedented sanctions from the West on various industries, Russia’s war chest has been padded by oil revenue. China and India, among others, are still buying surplus barrels of Russian oil, which has been cheaper ever since Western traders began shunning it. The price cap is designed to be enforced by companies that provide shipping, insurance and other services for Russian oil. Countries like Poland and Estonia wanted a lower price cap, emphasizing that $60 is too close to the current market price for Russian oil. Because of the relatively generous price cap, Russia may continue to find buyers.
The bubble in predicting the end of the world

Former U.S. Treasury Secretary Larry Summers says the world faces the “most complex, disparate and cross-cutting set of challenges” he’s ever encountered. In his wittily titled “The End of the World is Just the Beginning”, the geopolitical strategist suggests that a number of countries from Germany to China face insuperable demographic challenges. The threat to America’s global hegemony from China is the subject of Ray Dalio’s “The Changing World Order”. The U.S. stock market bubble has only partially deflated, bond yields around the world trail below inflation, and global property markets are exposed to rising interest rates. The Assyrian who forecast the world would end in 2800 BC was wrong.
CNN —Kim Kardashian and Kanye West have come to a divorce agreement, a source with knowledge of the negotiations tells CNN. Per the agreement, a draft of which was obtained by CNN, Kardashian will receive $200,000 per month in child support from West, who last year legally changed his name to Ye, and share joint custody of their four children. CNN has reached out to representatives for Kardashian and West for comment. Kardashian filed for divorce from West in February 2021, citing irreconcilable differences. In March 2022, Kardashian was declared legally single after being granted a request to change her marital status.

Still not sure what crypto is? Join the club

The original crypto, bitcoin, emerged in 2009, out of the ashes of the worst financial crisis in modern history. The term “crypto” harkens to the way the networks are secured, using cryptographic systems (think: really, really elaborate encryptions) that make the tokens virtually impossible to counterfeit. Once the transaction is verified by the network it is stored — forever — in an immutable “block.”Bottom line: Blockchain is the underlying technology of the crypto world. And like, sure, people are starting to adopt blockchain systems outside the world of crypto, and they do seem to hold promise. The bitcoin network went public in 2009, created by an anonymous developer (or group of developers) using the name Satoshi Nakamoto.
